Iron Age in the spotlight at 2023 ‘Brochtoberfest’

Orkney Archaeology Society’s annual Brochtoberfest event this weekend places the focus firmly on the Iron Age.

A contingent from the UHI Archaeology Institute takes centre stage at the King Street Halls, Kirkwall, on Saturday, October 14:

  • 10.00am          Sara Marinoni (UHIAI MRes student) Forging Resources: an anthracological investigation of wood-fuel resources for Iron Age Metalworking in Northern Scotland.
  • 10.45am          Rick Barton (ORCA): Iron Age excavations at Swartigill.
  • 11.30am          Martin Carruthers (UHIAI lecturer): The Cairns: What have we learnt so far?

Getting the proceedings under way on the evening of Friday, October 13, is Stephen Jennings, with an online talk entitled Ostentatious or Monumental? The evolution of the wheelhouse in Shetland.
