Join the ORCA team on North Isles industrial heritage fieldwork

Join the ORCA team carrying out industrial heritage fieldwork in Orkney's North Isles over the next two weeks.

The ORCA team will be out for the next two weeks undertaking fieldwork for the From Peat Spade to Tangle Trade industrial heritage project.

This first phase takes place in Rousay, Stronsay, Shapinsay and Sanday. The work will include photographic and measured surveys of buildings, kelp workings, quarries, threshing machines and stone crushers.

Anyone wanting to get involved, learn a new skill and enjoy the industrial heritage of the North Isles is welcome to come along – either for the whole day or just a couple of hours.

Please wear stout suitable clothing and footwear.

Rousay

  • May 6: Meet at Saviskaill Bay car park at 0930 and 1330.
  • May 7: Meet at Saviskaill Bay car park at 0930. Location of 1330 meet-up TBC.

Stronsay

  • May 8: Meet at the Heritage Centre car park at 0930 and 1330.
  • May 9: Meet at the Heritage Centre car park at 0930 and 1330.
  • May 10: Meet at the Heritage Centre car park at 0930 and 1330.

Shapinsay

  • May 13: Meet at harbour car park at 0930 and 1330.
  • May 14: Meet at harbour car park at 0930 and 1330.

Sanday

  • May 15: Meet at the Heritage Centre car park at 1000 and 1330.
  • May 16: Meet at the Heritage Centre car park at 0930 and 1330.
  • May 17: Meet at the Heritage Centre car park at 0930 and 1330.
