We’re delighted to announce the addition of two new “sandwich” undergraduate degrees to our portfolio – the first and only two of their kind in Scotland.
With the new BA (Hons) Archaeology (with a year in industry) and BSc (Hons) Archaeological Science (with a year in industry) degrees, the fourth year of the course gives students the opportunity to undertake a year-long work placement before returning to complete their honours degree in year five.

The degrees will not only equip students with strong archaeological knowledge and practical skills but provide the real-world experience and professional competencies that are highly valued in both academic and commercial settings.
Programme leader Dr Ben Elliott said: “We are delighted to be the first university in Scotland to offer the sandwich degree format for archaeology students. This has been a hugely successful approach to teaching archaeology elsewhere in the UK.
“A year in industry, recognised in your degree title, tells employers that you have substantial applied experience within the sector, and have worked to a professional standard before entering the jobs market.
“These programmes bring us the opportunity to harness the excellent links that UHI Archaeology Institute has across the heritage sector to create meaningful and career-enhancing placements for our students.
“This is a significant development within the educational landscape of Scottish archaeology, and UHI are extremely proud to be leading the way in this regard.”
