Join us for an informal session of sharing stories, photographs or objects relating to Orkney’s role in the oil industry on Saturday, August 30, in the King Street Halls, Kirkwall.

With changes on the horizon, it’s important that we document the experiences and stories of oil from the community. As part of the Transects project, we are interested in hearing peoples’ stories of oil and gas in Orkney, of when it arrived, the changes and the challenges, how it has impacted Orkney, and the people connected with it now and over the years.

There will be two sessions – 10am-noon and 2-4pm – with a drop-in soup-and-sandwich lunch between noon and 2pm.

  • Do you have a connection with Oil in Orkney?
  • Have you worked in the oil industry in Orkney?
  • Did you go to the Oxy Club?
  • What changes have you seen, how has Orkney adapted?
  • How will the transition from oil to renewable energy transitions impact the community?
  • Do you have any stories, photos or objects you would like to share?

Transects aims to improve the resilience of coastal communities in the marine energy transition – Learning from previous energy transitions to help communities develop strategies for transitions happening now and in the future.

The UHI Orkney team is using creative, heritage and archaeological approaches to explore marine energy transitions. Transects is a UKRI funded research project led by Heriot Watt University.
