The 36th Field Runologists Workshop, which took place in Orkney this week, has been hailed a great success!
The group meets once a year, each time going to a different area of interest. The invited participants are researchers specialising in runic inscriptions.
There were 20 participants in the workshop at UHI Orkney, organised by Professor Emerita Judith Jesch of Nottingham University, Loraine Jensen from the American Association for Runic Studies, Dr Ragnhild Ljosland of the UHI Archaeology Institute and Dr Siobhan Cooke-Miller, curator of archaeology at the Orkney Museum.
Over three days the participants studied and discussed the majority of runic inscriptions found in Orkney and visited many of the locations where they were found.
The programme also included a public event: the “Rune Relay” in the St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall. There the public were invited to hear a series of short presentations where the experts each chose a runic inscription that they found interesting. This event was well-attended and enjoyed by all.
The organisers would like to thank UHI Orkney, the Orkney Museum and Orkney Archaeology Society for supporting the event.
