Dr Sarah Jane Gibbon was talking Orkney placenames recently at the Scottish Place Name Society Autumn Conference.
Her paper, ‘The ghost of something big’: spaces and places in medieval Orkney brought together examples of her research into medieval settlement form and change, focusing on bœr, bú, skáli, hus and stofa placenames and developing the work of previous scholars, especially W.P.L. Thomson, who is quoted in the presentation title.
An international audience of over 100 attendees came together for the conference, which covered a wide range of interesting papers on placename studies.
