UHI Archaeology Institute lecturer Dr Jen Miller is the co-editor of a new guidance document for forensic archaeology in the UK.
The publication, produced by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) – a professional body representing archaeologists working in the UK and overseas. The programme leader of our MLitt Archaeological Studies, Jen is also the academic lead on CIfA’s forensic archaeology expert panel, and together with Alastair Vannan, the practitioner lead, extensively updated the standards document to align with current forensic science legislation.
“This was a root and branch overhaul to reflect the considerable changes in the practice of forensic science that have occurred since the last version was published, recognising the significantly closer alignment in existence now between forensic archaeology and the wider forensic disciplines.

“The expectations on forensic science, and on expert witnesses providing evidence to the courts, have developed over the past decade, and continue to do so. These include ever stricter expectations of demonstrable objectivity, competence, and quality. We have sought to ensure that the new version of the Standards and guidance takes accounts of those changes and conforms with these expectations and obligations.”
