Archaeology in a Day – Open Day at the UHI Archaeology Institute, Orkney

  • Time: 1 pm to 5.00 pm

The University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute is located in one of the most exciting archaeology areas in the world – Orkney in Northern Scotland. Surrounded by thousands of archaeology sites ranging from the Neolithic to World War 2, the Archaeology Institute is well placed as a world-class teaching and research organisation to advance our understanding of the historic environment.

So, come along and experience hands on archaeology at our open day, talk to staff and students and discover what studying Archaeology at The University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute has to offer. You will also have the opportunity to take part in workshops on aspects of practical archaeology, including

  • using microscopes to analyse pollen and charcoal unearthed at the Ness of Brodgar
  • examining finds from The Cairns excavation
  • exploring 4000 year old ceramics
  • examining the whale bones unearthed at Cata Sands
  • creating a 3D image from a laser scanner

You will also see how we use the unique archaeological landscape of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to further your studies. The event is open to anyone who is considering studying Archaeology at undergraduate or post graduate level in addition to anyone who is considering one of our short courses.DSC_0095

You can study in any one of the UHI colleges across Northern Scotland if you do not wish to locate to Orkney.

Ness of Brodgar Open Day

1607310821 Ness open daysThe Open Day at The Ness of Brodgar are now finalised:

  • Venue: The Ness of Brodgar Archaeological Excavation and Stenness School
  • Date:Sunday 21st August
  • Time: 11am – 4pm. Last tour at 3.30pm.
  • Continuous tours and demonstrations
  • Refreshments available in Stenness Hall

Activities at the Ness site itself include:

  • Dry-stone walling
  • Stone and colour
  • Pot making
  • Flint knapping
  • Wood working
  • The new Ness of Brodgar jewellery range from Ola Gorie
  • Big Raffle with the main prize of a pendant from the Ola Gorie new jewellery range
  • Orkney Archaeology Society shop
  • Guides and finds

Activities at Stenness School include:

  • Stone tools and rocks
  • Animal bones including “Invent an animal”
  • Willow work
  • Stone felting
  • Wash off Neolithic tattoos
  • Shell jewellery extravaganza for all ages!
  • Community Cafe

Parking is available in the field and at the school as usual. The car park now has a covering of hard core which makes parking a lot easier. Signposting will guide you from the Ness of Brodgar to Stenness School.

I’m sorry, but we can’t cater for coach and mini bus parties and any groups larger than 8 people.

The “Archaeology in a Day” Open Day is open to anyone who is considering studying Archaeology at undergraduate or post graduate level in addition to anyone who is considering one of our short courses. We shall be videoing some of the workshops and posting on to our You Tube channel http://bit.ly/1PF093k so even if you can`t visit Orkney in person, take advantage of one of our strong points and experience distance learning “Archaeology in a Day”.
