Archaeology undergraduate named Higher Education Student of the Year

Gary Lloyd, an archaeology student based at Orkney College UHI, has been named overall winner of the University of the Highlands and Islands Higher Education Student of the Year award.

Gary Lloyd, an archaeology student based at Orkney College UHI, has been named overall winner of the University of the Highlands and Islands Higher Education Student of the Year award.

In addition, Gary took home two special awards for ā€œBest Performance in Undergraduate Archaeology studentā€ and ā€œBest Undergraduate Archaeology student dissertationā€.

Gary recently graduated with a first class BA (Hons) archaeology degree and is now studying for a masters degree in archaeological studies.

Congratulations Gary from all at the institute.


Each academic year, Orkney College UHI also runs a special award scheme, which celebrates the achievements of outstanding students within specific departments at the college.

The winners of 2020ā€™s archaeology prizes are:

  • Judith Robertson Memorial Prize (Orkney Archaeology): William Lowe
  • Best Performance in Undergraduate Archaeology student: Gary Lloyd
  • Best Undergraduate Archaeology student dissertation: Gary Lloyd
  • Best Performance in Postgraduate Archaeology student: Sigurd Towrie
