We’re delighted to announce a fully funded PhD opportunity focusing on the Taighean Tughaidh of the Western Isles.

Home, Hearth and Heritage is a 3½ year studentship funded through the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH) CDA Scheme.

It is a collaborative history/archaeological project and the successful applicant will be based at the UHI North, West & Hebrides, Cnoc Soilleir campus with occasional working at the UHI Centre for History, Dornoch.

Working with the community, the student will bring together archaeological techniques and oral history to better understand the Taighean Tughaidh – domestic dwellings used from the mid-18th until the late 20th century.

Their remains are found across the Western Isles, where they are a key part of the landscape, cultural heritage and identity.

That said, few have been systematically recorded and reported on archaeologically, leaving a substantial research gap which this studentship seeks to address.

Full details of the PhD, including how to apply, can be found here.

If you have any queries or would like to discuss the project, email Dr Rebecca Rennell.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday, May 17, 2024.
