The recording of June 2021’s monthly UHI Archaeology Institute research seminar, which took place on Friday, June 25.
The seminar, entitled 5,000 years of waiting for the tooth fairy – the Ness of Brodgar’s seaweed-eating sheep and the European context, was led by Dr Magdalena Blanz, a recent Archaeology Institute PhD graduate.
Her study of sheep and deer teeth from the Ness of Brodgar has revealed further information on past animal diets, animal movements, herd age structures and depositional practices.
How such information can be gleaned from teeth and how the adaptation of sheep to consume seaweed impacted Orkney were among the topics covered in the seminar, which presented the results of Dr Blanz’s PhD research.
