The 31st Orkney Science Festival kicks off today, Thursday, and among the events on offer are talks on the ongoing excavations at the Ness of Brodgar, Orkney.

On Sunday, September 5, a UHI Archaeology Institute team and colleagues will present The Ness in Rock and Stone – this yearā€™s Dr Raymond Lamb Memorial Lecture. The talk, hosted by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, outlines some of the insights gained from the study of finds from the Neolithic complex.

Dr Martha Johnson highlights the rocks that donā€™t fit the local geology, and shows clues to their origins, while Dr Ann Clarke looks at the stone tools, their uses and users.

Dr Antonia Thomas will detail the main themes emerging from her research on the carved and incised stones.
