Digging at the Ness of Brodgar – one of the UHI Archaeology Institute’s flagship excavations – will resume on Monday, July 4, 2022, running until Friday, August 19, 2022.
Announced this week, the dates are dependent on pandemic developments but, all going well, it is hoped that the entire site can be re-opened. Excavation this year saw only Trench J and Structures Ten and Twelve in Trench P uncovered for a seven-week season.
Although the excavation area will return to its pre-covid size, the excavation team will be smaller than usual and the Ness team are not looking for volunteers in 2022. There are, however, a few spaces for very experienced excavators – particularly those familiar with digging complex Neolithic sites. Contact nick.card@uhi.ac.uk for more details.
The finds team will also be much restricted in size from previous years. It will consist of very few members, committed to it for six or seven weeks, with a strong archaeological background. Enquiries to anne.mitchell@uhi.ac.uk.
The site is open to the public between July 6 and August 17, 2022.
