An article from Current Archaeology magazine looking at dolmens – in particular the thoughts of Professor Colin Richards (UHI Archaeology Institute) and Professor Vicki Cummings (University of Central Lancashire).
They suggest that some dolmens were never encased within mounds or cairns but that their purpose was the creation of a display.
They describe dolmens as monuments of wonder, enchantment, power, and dramatic effect – not the denuded remains of burial chambers.

Professors Richards and Cummings’ book on the subject, Monuments in the Making: Raising the Great Dolmens in Early Neolithic Northern Europe, was published in September 2021.
