Our first fieldtrip of the semester took place yesterday, with some of our new undergraduate students joined by existing postgrads for an introduction to Orkney’s archaeology.

The trip, led by lecturers Dr Ben Elliott, Dr James Moore, Martin Carruthers and MRes student Sue Dyke, began in the East Mainland parish of Holm to view the University of Central Lancashire excavation of a Maeshowe-type chambered cairn.

From there it was on to the West Mainland, stopping first at Skara Brae before heading to Brough of Bigging, Yesnaby, for a discussion on landscape archaeology.
