Every year the UHI Archaeology Institute welcomes students from across the world.

One of our most recent arrivals, Yasmin, hails from Oregon, USA, and moved to Orkney to start her BSc in Archaeological Science in 2023.

Her goal is to continue her studies and enter the field of forensic archaeology.

“I wasn’t initially supposed to come up to Orkney, but when I got the chance, I decided to take it,” she explained.

“I was very excited about all of the great opportunities studying so close to the islands’ archaeological sites. I had visited once before and fell in love with the nature and the quiet of Orkney.”

Now she’s well into her first year of study how has it been for the 18-year-old Oregonian?

“The UHI Orkney campus is the perfect size for me and the ability to have one-on-one assistance from my lecturers is very helpful.

“The classes are great and very interesting. Each lecture is very informative and the tutors are helpful and are happy to answer any questions during class.

“I have been enjoying my assignments, which are not only interesting to research but add a lot of context to the topics we’ve discussed during lectures.”

“All in all, the UHI Orkney campus has been really welcoming and it’s great being able to go and check out other people’s PhD and Masters projects, as well as being able to help out and get hands-on experience.”
