The folklore and songs of plants is the subject of a free UHI Archaeology Institute talk in Kirkwall next week.
Scotland has a rich folk tradition of plants, their uses, lore, and beliefs – and songs! On the occasion of the Orkney Folk Festival, renowned folklorist and folk singer Professor Margaret Bennett will share some of that treasure with us.
Originally from the Isle of Skye, Prof Bennett studied folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and then Ethnology (PhD) at Edinburgh University. From 1984 to 1996 she was a lecturer and researcher at the School of Scottish Studies (Edinburgh), and later contributed to the development of the BA (Hons) in Cultural Studies at UHI Orkney.
Since 1996 she has lectured part-time at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is also honorary research and teaching Fellow at the University of St Andrews.
The free talk is open to all UHI students, staff, and other interested persons and takes place at the UHI Orkney restaurant from 10.30am on Monday, May 27.
Please note, this event will not be streamed online or recorded.
