With the new academic year now well under way, the Archaeology Institute is positively buzzing with our intake of new undergraduate students back to pre-covid levels.

Almost 25 per cent more students signed up for a BA in archaeology or a BSc in archaeological science this year compared to last, and we were delighted to welcome them – in person and online – earlier this month.

Dr Ben Elliott is our undergraduate programme leader.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see the appetite for studying archaeology with UHI returning, after the disruption and uncertainty of the pandemic. These numbers show us that people are, and always have been, curious about the archaeological past.

“UHI provides a wide range of options to allow for those who want to move away, study from home, look after their families, or work alongside their degree in archaeology. We are proud that our programmes stand shoulder-to-shoulder with every other archaeology degree in the country, in terms of teaching standards and student achievement, but our flexibility also opens the door to a host of people whose circumstances mean that they wouldn’t have previously considered university as a viable option. I see this reflected in the growing size of our cohort.”
