The UHI Archaeology Institute’s Martin Carruthers and Amanda Brend will be in Holm on Saturday, outlining the results of geophysical surveys at the Loch of Ayre Iron Age broch.
The surveys, carried out by ORCA for the St Mary’s community and the Loch of Ayre Walkway Association, revealed a probably external settlement outside the broch as well as helped determine its character and extent. They suggest other settlement features, some of which may be associated with the broch, and cultivation remains from the Medieval/post-Medieval periods.
The broch was excavated in 1901, the antiquarians exposing the inner/outer walls and interior. Martin and Amanda will also look back at this operation, particularly the finds and how they relate to more recent Iron Age assemblages.
The Orkney Archaeology Society talk, Broch and Beyond: Past and Present Investigations at the Loch of Ayre, is in the Holm hall from 7-9pm on Saturday, June 7.
However, before the main event there will be an archaeological show-and-tell, when the public can bring along any potential artefacts they have found for identification. This runs from 4.30pm.
