The discovery and excavation of an 18th century wreck in Sanday is in the running for Current Archaeology’s 2026 Rescue Project of the Year, with voting now open to the public.

The timber remains were exposed by the elements in 2024 and prompt, careful recovery, combined with archaeological and community detective work enabled its story to be told and its identity to be revealed.

The project, a collaboration between Wessex Archaeology, the Sanday Heritage Group, Orkney Archaeology Society and Historic Environment Scotland, is one of eight shortlisted for the award.

The winners will be announced on February 28, 2026, as part of Current Archaeology Live! event in London.
