Murder, mayhem and misdemeanour – Jen’s talk on the application of archaeology to the recently deceased

Forensic archaeology is the subject of an Orkney Archaeology Society talk by Dr Jen Miller on March 26, 2026.

Forensic archaeology is the subject of an Orkney Archaeology Society (OAS) talk by Dr Jen Miller later this month.

Dr Jen Miller

As forensic science has advanced, so has appreciation of forensic archaeology in the investigation of complex cases involving suspicious death. Techniques used by archaeologists can be extrapolated to modern crime scene analysis.

Jen, the programme leader of our MLitt Archaeological Studies, has undertaken over 500 cases in her career. Her talk, Murder, mayhem and misdemeanour: the application of archaeology to the recently deceased, will demonstrate how archaeology, together with a solid understanding of legal requirements, can help find a grave or exclude areas of suspicion. It can provide informed comment on how a body was concealed, what tools were used and interpret the sequence of events and timings of death.

The free OAS talk takes place in the King Street Halls, Kirkwall, on Thursday, March 26, at 7pm. Because of the nature of the subject the talk will not be recorded.
