A walk and talks with the TRANSECTS team are part of a weekend of events centred on plans to commemorate the Birsay whalebone.

The bones, part of a 19th century beached whale, stood over the headland at Northside until it was toppled by gales in 2023. Due to their condition they were not raised again and, next week, the Birsay Heritage Trust will outline plans for a bronze statue to take their place.
The announcement takes place on Friday, March 27, at 7.30pm, in the Birsay hall, along with a talk from Dr Jen Harland on the species of the whale the bones belonged to and the wider story of whaling history and use of strandings in Orkney. TRANSECTS artist Joanne Kaar will also share progress on her residency exploring marine energy transitions.
On Saturday 28 March there is another chance to join the team in the Birsay Hall and view the information stalls from 10 am. Join us for a shared lunch in the hall at 12:30pm.
Artist Joanne Kaar will lead a shore walk, with creative activities, on the Saturday afternoon from 2-4pm. This creative walkshop will explore energy transitions from the north shore and visit the whalebone site.
Those interested in the walk should meet at the Point of Buckquoy car park at 2pm.
