The artwork of two of the MA Contemporary Art and Archaeology students, Anna Charlotta Gardiner and Caitlin Brodie, is currently on show at the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney, as part of Gen-erate: Orkney’s Recent Art Graduates 2024-25.

The exhibition celebrates the work of 12 emerging artists who have studied at school or college in Orkney and recently gained a degree in art or design subjects. Caitlin and Anna both graduated from UHI Orkney with BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2024, and both started the MA Contemporary Art and Archaeology in 2025.

Anna Charlotta Gardiner’s visual art and performance work uses reclaimed materials, including the hair of her dog, Shadow, which she hand-spins and felts using ancient techniques to create costumes that are alive, whether inhabited in performance, or existing as beings in their own right. The various components of her work weave together to create immersive installations that inhabit the space between myth and science, heritage and dreams.

Caitlin’s work explores mythology, folklore, and science fiction, using the Russell Hoban’s seminal novel Riddley Walker, and the dark seaside entertainment of Punch and Judy shows as springboards for creative re-imaginings. Through drawings, “dollies” and projected text, Caitlin’s work explores the way that stories and things form linking threads between past, present, and future.

The exhibition runs until April 18, 2026.
