Join the TRANSECTS project team from UHI Orkney and artist Kirsty Russell on Saturday, May 30, for a storylines workshop exploring community energy stories for Peterhead and the surrounding area.

Whaling and whale oil was a key industry for Peterhead and is now almost invisible. The oil boom in the 1970s with the construction of the gas terminal at St Fergus and power station at Boddham greatly impacted the area. Now Peterhead is the focus for renewables infrastructure as a key connecting point for the new grid network.

What benefits have these energies brought to the area? What changes have you seen? What does the future hold We invite you to bring a photo or an object and share its story. Mark key sites on our energy map.

The free event, takes place in the Buchanhaven Heritage Centre, Peterhead, from 1-3pm on Saturday, May 30.

TRANSECTS is exploring the impact of marine energy transitions (whale oil, oil & gas and renewables) past and present for coastal communities in three case study areas (Orkney, NE Scotland and The Humber). Our team is taking a creative cultural heritage approach to marine energy transitions. In north-east Scotland, we will be focusing place-based activities in Peterhead and Aberdeen.

Our team is based at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and University of Hull. TRANSECTS is a research project funded by UKRI and DEFRA. You can find out more about the TRANSECTS project and the UHI Team’s approach on our webpage.
