One of our PhD students, Jenny Murray, recently visited Tromsø in Norway to record a medieval altarpiece that has a statuette of St Magnus within its cabinet, for her thesis.
The curators at Tromsø Artiske University Museum offered Jenny a rare treat in allowing her to witness the altarpiece being opened and closed. As it opens you can see the light flood in, highlighting the beautifully painted saints within (Magnus is rightmost), and offering us an insight into the medieval worshippers’ experience on the saints’ feast days when the cabinet was opened during the Mass.
