Dr Ragnhild Ljosland features in the latest Robwords podcast, looking at What happened to Britain’s Viking language?
The programme focuses on when and why Orkney and Shetland lost its Norn language, and also about the runes carved into Maeshowe’s interior in the 12th century.
If the video has whetted your appetite, Raggie is also giving a  joint talk with Professor Viveka Velupillai, from Shetland, and musician Barry Nisbet as part of the 2026 Orkney International Science Festival. This will be about today’s Shaetlan and how it has roots both in Scots and Norn and will see Barry will sing the Hildina ballad.
“A Language Once Again” is on Friday, September 4 , from 5.15-6.15 pm at the Orkney Theatre.
