Dr Sarah Jane Gibbon teams up with Dr Tom Rendall to ponder the future of Orcadian dialect in an Orkney Science Festival event in Kirkwall this afternoon, Thursday, September 3.
Populations are changing, and the various forms of media affect us all. Does this mean that dialect is fated to go the way of the great auk and the cruisie lamp? Can social media help? Could it even become a language – as has happened in Shetland? Tom and Sarah Jane will look at views and examples to open up the debate.
What’s the future of the Orkney dialect? begins at 5.15pm in the Orkney Theatre. Entry is by ticket, available here.
