The science of radiocarbon dating is the subject of our next free seminar, which takes place on Friday, October 30, at 4pm.

Professor Seren Griffiths, of Manchester Metropolitan University, has led two AHRC projects, which will form the basis of her talk.
- Project Radiocarbon is a repository for radiocarbon data and currently it brings together over 35,000 dates from across Ireland and Britain into one open, searchable, map-based repository.
- Project TIME – Third and fourth millennia Ireland and Britain: a history of Major social change Explored provides a new approach to the period between 3500–1500 cal BC, looking at evidence across traditional divisions in things, site types and peoples to think about the lived experiences and practices in new ways.
These two projects address how archaeologists use radiocarbon data to create the sequence and structure of archaeological temporal knowledge and in her talk, Seren will look at how these approaches can be used to write what she has called “ethically Bayesian” narratives about the past.
You can attend the seminar, which begins at 4pm, in person, at the UHI Orkney lecture theatre. We will post the online attendance link nearer the time.
