Although properties on the outer isles can be cheaper, ferry timetables and journey times means it is may not be possible to commute into Kirkwall for work.
Renting
Due to the buoyancy of the self-catering holiday market, and the large number of workers needing rental accommodation, there is a scarcity of rental property.
You may find it difficult to find rental accommodation through the estate agents and the local Housing Association. Rental properties (and properties for sale) are sometimes advertised on Orkney Facebook sales page – Orkney Merkit Place – and we advise you follow that closely.
Rental properties are also sometimes advertised in the small ads of the weekly The Orcadian newspaper (NB these are not displayed on the newspaper’s website). However, Archaeology Institute staff will provide you with every assistance in finding accommodation through our local networks and contacts.
