Surrounding the broch-period settlement was a massive, ditched enclosure.
Although this great sub-circular enclosure was once an important boundary for the settlement, it was subsequently infilled and frequently surmounted by later buildings and features.
The work on the ditch has thus far been relatively small in scale. However, it is clear that the ditch is rich in artefactual and faunal remains. We have excavated a section through a segment of the ditch in the north part of the site and this has shown it to have been initially dug at the same time that the broch was built.
