
Dr Sarah Jane Gibbon and UHI Archaeology Institute PhD student Jenny Murray will be among the speakers at the St Magnus Symposium in Orkney on Friday.
The theme of the UHI Institute for Northern Studies symposium, which runs from Thursday, September 1, until Saturday, September 3, is Ruler, Poet, Saint: Rǫgnvaldr jarl Kali Kolsson and his World.
Rognvald was earl of Orkney from 1137-58/59 and the conference will explore the history and literary representation of the man, set in the wider context of twelfth-century Orkney and the world beyond.
Sarah Jane and Jenny’s paper, entitled Rognvald the Saint Maker looks at the ecclesiastical legacy of Earl Rognvald’s rule, with regards to parish formation and identity in Orkney and church building in Shetland.
