A postgraduate student from Norway has joined the ORCA team this week for a two-month internship.

Maria Winther Sørensen is studying a masters in archaeology at the Norwegian University of Sciences and Technology (NTNU) and on Wednesday took the chance to take part in the ongoing excavations at Swartigill, Caithness.

Speaking of her time across the Pentland Firth, Maria said: “I have only excavated sites in Norway, so this was a very good learning experience.

“The goal of the ORCA internship is to gain work experience as well as build networks internationally.”

The excavation at the Iron Age Swartigill site resumes on Monday and runs until September 8.

Since 2015, the dig has uncovered the remains of a settlement area spanning over a thousand years – from c350BC until AD945.

Visitors to the site are welcome and tours are available. Details on how to reach it are here.
