A delegation from the UHI Archaeology Institute was in Wales recently, where two gave presentations at the Iron Age Dialogues conference in Cardiff.
Martin Carruthers is the director of The Cairns excavation project and an institute lecturer. His presentation, Becoming the Broch: Assembling Ancestry and Crafting Kin at The Cairns Iron Age Settlement, Orkney, was delivered on the opening day of the three-day conference.
Martin will be back at The Cairns, in South Ronadsay, next month for the penultimate year of excavation at the Iron Age site. The dig runs from Monday, June 9, until Friday, July 18.
His presentation was followed by PhD student Holly Young, who outlined her ongoing doctoral research in Shore Life: The contribution of marine molluscs to Iron Age subsistence and social life in Northern Scotland.

After securing her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the UHI Archaeology Institute, Holly began her SGSAH-funded PhD in 2021. It followed on from her Master’s degree research, which focused on the shell assemblage from The Cairns.
Hailing from the Scottish Borders, Holly relocated to Orkney for her BA (Hons) after being told that if she wanted to study archaeology, Orkney was the place to be.
Can’t argue with that…
We’d be delighted to hear from anyone considering a self-funded MRes or PhD. Our research themes and topics are outlined here and if any of those are of interest, contact Professor Jane Downes for more information.
