UHI Archaeology Institute students were among the volunteers at the ongoing excavation of a Neolithic chambered cairn in Orkney’s East Mainland.

The Blomuir structure, in Holm, was first found in the late 19th century and after some archival detective work, followed by geophysical survey, its location was discovered again.

Work on the Maeshowe-type cairn began in 2023, directed by Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark, of National Museums Scotland, and Professor Vicki Cummings, Cardiff University. The final season of excavation ended last week.
