After a weekend of torrential rain and wind, Monday dawned bright. Much to our relief, because that was the day of the last student fieldtrip of 2023.

Led by UHI Archaeology Institute lecturers Dr Ragnhild Ljosland and Dr James Moore, and organised by Dr Ben Elliott, the undergraduate group departed from the Kirk Green for a walking tour of Kirkwall to learn about the town’s history, archaeology and development.

The walk complete, it was back to St Magnus Cathedral, the group venturing inside to learn more of the story of the 12th century structure and hear the story of Magnus himself.

The afternoon concluded with a guided tour of the cathedral’s upper levels.
