Research carried out by the LIFTE research project has been named one of Scotland’s five “most amazing archaeological discoveries of 2023”.

In February, an international team of pottery specialists was in Orkney examining the county’s entire assemblage of imported late medieval and early post medieval pottery, including finds from the Skaill farm excavation in Rousay.

They not only identified pottery from eastern England and mainland Scotland, but from northern Germany, southern Scandinavia and France. This confirmed Orkney’s place in a European network of trading routes.
