An article by UHI Archaeology Institute PhD candidate Sarah-Jane Haston on the excavation of an early hearth at the Ness of Brodgar.

The stone-built hearth belonged to Structure Five, which, dating to c3300BC, was the earliest excavated building during fieldwork on the Ness.

Sarah-Jane is analysing the carbonised plant remains from Structures Five, Eight and Ten at the Ness of Brodgar.

Her research will provide insight into the agricultural practices, foraging activity and fuel resources used by the Neolithic communities who built and used the prehistoric complex.
