The archaeology of Shetland’s Weisdale valley is the subject of a talk by ORCA’s Rick Barton in Lerwick tomorrow night, Thursday.
In the 19th century, Weisdale suffered from some of the most extensive land clearances in Shetland.
Commissioned by SSEN, the Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) carried out work across the well-preserved remains in the Weisdale valley. The results provide a rich resource for understanding the landscape and the lives of rural communities at an everyday level and through periods of significant change.
Rick will share some of the findings and examine life in a Shetland township from an archaeological perspective. How to preserve Shetland’s relict crofting landscapes for the future will also be discussed.
The talk, for the Shetland Amenity Trust, takes place in the Shetland Museum and Archives on Thursday, March 13, at 7pm. Tickets, costing £5, can be booked here.
