The prehistory of red deer in Orkney is the subject of a talk UHI Archaeology Institute PhD student Kath Page in Kirkwall tomorrow afternoon, Friday, September 11.
In Hind Sight: the when and where of Neolithic red deer in Orkney will see Kath deliver the results of an Orkney Archaeology Society funded project that analysed radiocarbon dates from the Ness of Brodgar and the Blackhammer and Yarso chambered cairns to explore changes in depositional practices during the Neolithic/Bronze Age transition and the movement of red deer in the landscape.
The talk, in the King Street Halls, begins at 2pm. Entry is free.
Also beginning at 2pm is walk/talk exploring the history of wind power in Orkney.
ORCA’s Dan Lee will be joined by Neil Kermode (Orkney Renewable Energy Forum) on the walk, which will take you from the top of Burgar Hill to the top of Costa Hill and back again. Although some this will be by vehicle, there is a reasonably strenuous walk from the base of Costa Hill and back down.

Back in Kirkwall, Martin Carruthers will look back on 20 years of excavation at The Cairns Iron Age site in a free talk beginning at 7pm in the St Magnus Centre.
