PhD student Gary Lloyd took top spot for his research poster at the recent Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Research Student Symposium (NEBARRS) at Bradford University.
Gary’s poster outlined his methods and goals for his PhD, Made Through Making: Stonework, skill and social change in Neolithic Orkney. For it, he is looking at percussive stone tools, primarily from the Ness of Brodgar, exploring the changing significance of stoneworking in Neolithic Orkney.
Originally from Dallas, Texas, Gary has been a UHI Archaeology Institute student since 2016, securing his BA (Hons) Archaeology in 2020.
In 2022, he was awarded an MLitt in Archaeology Studies before completing an MRes on multi-hollow cobbles from the Ness of Brodgar – multi-purpose, cuboid stone tools with up to six depressions ground, chipped, or pecked into their faces.

We’d be delighted to hear from anyone considering a self-funded MRes or PhD. Our research themes and topics are outlined here and if any of those are of interest, contact Professor Jane Downes for more information.
