A selection of scanned photographs from 1936 have been added to the Knowe of Lairo entry in our Tombs of the Isles resource.
The structure is an intriguing one because it started life as a stalled cairn, but was extensively remodelled in prehistory.
Lairo’s first phase may never have been completed before the alterations, which have been tentatively explained as an attempt to convert the stalled chamber to a Maeshowe-type.
The photographs were taken by Edinburgh surveyor and draughtsman David Wilson and have recently been scanned from the Orkney Sites and Monuments Record (SMR).
