Fieldwalking involves the surface collection of artefacts in ploughed fields on a grid so that distribution patterns over larger areas can be observed. It was blue skies and sunshine when students arrived in Sandwick to begin the practical exercise, led by UHI Archaeology Institute lecturer Martin Carruthers and ORCA’s Chris Gee.

The newly ploughed field, on the Lyking road, lies a short distance from the remains of the Iron Age Stackrue broch, a medieval chapel site and a collection of Bronze Age barrows.
